Pink Floyd are one of the legendary bands that developed out of London’s alternative rock secene in the mid 60’s.
Led originally by the incomparable Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd started life as purveyors of classic short psychedelic singles like “Arnold Layne” and “See Emily Play“.
Unfortunately Syd Barrett quickly succumbed to Lsd and by 1968, with guitarist David Gilmour on board and Roger Waters, the groups bassist, taking over the main songwriting role, Pink Floyd started re-inventing themselves as a rock band that embraced elements of prog and psychedelia to create something quite unique. In March 1973 they released their masterpiece, “The Dark Side of the Moon“, which became one of the most successful albums of all time.
Combining vituoso playing with brilliant songs that described various stages of the human life, “The Dark Side of the Moon” was an artistic triumph.
Even the artwork, created by Hipgnosis, was stunning. However, by the late 70’s and “The Wall” album and tour, the inter-group relations were falling apart and after the release of “The Final Cut” in 1983 Rogers left the group for a solo career.
Whilst their golry years were behind them the remaining members released three critically acclaimed albums and toured to packed out stadium.
In 2005 the group came together to play one re-union concert at Live 8 in Hyde Park for the final time.
This guide covers all of the music Pink Floyd made and includes many brilliant and revealing interviews from the archives of the Nme & Melody Maker, to tell the complete story of this amazing band.
